God told me to reblog this.
cf also my applying to divinity school supremely confident of my very deep uncertainty
This. Is how I feel. Exactly.
But don’t you think, if they were seeking after God, being molded by him, and in His will, that God will have created them for the task he asks of them? Yes, it takes faith, yes, there is uncertainty, but surely the God who created you and said His plan was for good and not evil, for a future and hope would place that desire in you to do what He wills of you. It’s a blessing, not a cop out, to know at least part of God’s will.
While it does take prayer and self examination I disagree with the wonderful (used not facetiously) Susan B. as she is quoted here.
Yes….But….
I do believe God has placed certain desires in our heart, particularly those things that are pleasing to him and will keep us along a righteous path. However, in my experience too many people use this idea of God having a specific plan for them to determine every single move they make in life. And if not determine every move they make, justify it.
God’s plan for us is to serve him and seek him and bring others to him. If the decisions we make aid us in those things, it’s His will.
I don’t think God cares where you go to college or whether you move to a certain city or if you take a certain job. As long as it doesn’t hinder your work for his kingdom.
This is weird replying via reblog, and Susan B isn’t interesting enough (looking) to love it, but, I’d like to preserve responses.
I beg to differ at your claim about God caring about the college you went to, etc etc. Sometimes I think He lets us choose, but I think he always cares. It’s almost like those stupid (more in reference to the use of the analogy than the object of the analogy) pick your story books that we used to read and love. But, then, I don’t even like that analogy. But, we’re getting a bit off topic.
I believe God has a specific plan. I believe he’s orchestrated every moment of my every day. Coincidences don’t just happen. If he knows the hairs on my head (WHO needs to know that?) He’s knows when my Diet Coke will spill and make me sit at the McDonald’s window for another minute or two. I’ve seen His coincidences work out too often in my life to be convinced He doesn’t have a set plan. Now, I think we both agree, however, that when we’re not walking in his will, we’re not in his plan, and there’s an “alternate” plan, and there, sensibly, has to be billions of “alternate” plans. But an omnipotent God is still in control of all of those plans. ANNND I digress again. (There’s so much more here than just the quote && I have an affinity for nerdy theorizing.)
Along with what I’ve stated, if we are really seeking God with our hearts and listening to the Holy Spirit, and our hearts are aligned with God, then I think our desires will be in line with His. How many times was it good for the disciples or OT fathers to do something that was placed upon their hearts that ended up as part of God’s will?
